About Jars of Mystery

Jars of Mystery is a small shop on the Costa Brava, in Spain. We buy vintage jewellery in lots, sort every piece by hand and sell it in sealed jars that state, before you pay, how many pieces are inside and what kinds of item they can be.

Where the pieces come from

Estate sales, house clearances, vintage fairs and closing stock around Europe, bought in whole lots. Buying in volume is the only reason a jar can hold twenty-five pieces and not three — and it is why so much of the silver is Continental 800 and 835 rather than American 925.

What happens before a piece goes in a jar

Every piece is handled. Broken pieces and widowed earrings are pulled out, hallmarks are read with a loupe where a mark matters, and what survives is cleaned and sorted by line. A jar is filled to the categories and the piece count printed on it, and nothing goes in that is not on its list.

Who writes these notes

Anush looks after the catalogue: photographs every jar and writes the guides and notes on this site. The questions they answer are the ones buyers actually ask us — what is really inside, whether it is worth it, how to tell silver from silver-tone.
